Breakfast Wafflewich Bento Box
Try out this Breakfast Wafflewich Bento Box for a fun and easy lunch idea. Hearty multigrain waffles with a tropical fruit filling make this a yummy and nutritious lunchbox idea!
Breakfast for lunch is always a hit with our kiddos. We made this Breakfast Wafflewich Bento Box for a fun different lunch idea. This fruity “wafflewich” has hearty waffles that are stuffed with pineapple and SunGold kiwi for a fun tropical spin on a sandwich. Even the typical “non-sandwich” eaters can enjoy this fun and tasty breakfast or lunch idea! This is a great lunch that the kids can help make and pack into their bento box to help customize and get excited about eating!
Nutrition Tip: An excellent source of vitamin C, pineapple got its name from the Spanish word for “pinecone” thanks to its prickly skin. One cup of pineapple packs as much vitamin C as a medium orange!
Every once in a while we try to get super creative to keep the kid’s lunchboxes fun and interesting. Last week we made these Fruity PB& J Sandwiches and the kids loved them. We had a box of multigrain waffles in the freezer so I was trying to think what we could do with them. The kids said let’s make some sandwiches! So that is how this Breakfast Wafflewich Bento Box came about! We packed a few of our favorite sides to complete the lunch, but of course pack what you have or what the kids like. We packed hard boiled eggs, a clementine, and some Crispy Fruits.
Key Ingredients for Breakfast Wafflewich Bento Box
Multigrain Waffles– Waffles are a quick and easy favorite in our house that we generally always have in the freezer. We like whole grain because there is less sugar that regular waffles and have a few extra nutrients and the kids usually can’t tell the difference. But regular or a different flavor will work, too!
Pineapple– the kids (and myself) LOVE pineapple. Sweet, juicy, and loaded with flavor. Pineapples are a great source of Vitamin C, great for your immune system, and great for your mental health!
Kiwi– Another family favorite fruit, the kiwi is an excellent source of Fiber, Vitamin C, and potassium! We enjoy them sliced up for a snack or in fun recipes like this one.
Sides– We packed our bento box with a hard boiled egg for protein. We also packed a clementine for extra Vitamin C and the kids love them. You could also pack a yogurt, cheese stick, some carrots or celery. Whatever your kids will like, pack it!
How to make this Breakfast Wafflewich Bento Box
First start by toasting the multigrain (or favorite flavored) waffles. Then spread each waffle with a little cream cheese.
Next layer the waffles with the sliced kiwi and pineapple pieces. Place the other waffle on top to make it a sandwhich, then slice into four pieces.
Assemble the bento boxes with the “wafflewich”, some mandarin oranges, hard boiled eggs, or sides of choice.
Tip: cut the pineapple and SunGold kiwi into thin slices and don’t layer on too much cream cheese to keep this sandwich from getting too messy.

Amanda, in the photo you show the cantaloupe Crispy Green Crispy Fruit. Is that the fruit variety you used for nutritional information to calculate the total for the recipe?
Yes, all ingredients listed are accounted for in the nutritional information.
Thanks for the idea. I am going to try this substituting strawberries for pineapple with the kiwi and cream cheese in the wafflewich for the one with an allergy.
One tablespoon cream cheese is a small enough portion for most people with mild or moderate lactose intolerance. There is an organic lactose-free cream cheese for people with more severe intolerance and a few dairy-free options that open this recipe up to people with dairy allergies too.
Strawberries are a great substitution! Most fruits will work well here 🙂
Agreed – there are some great dairy-free cream cheese alternatives if you have an allergy. Feel free to use whatever one works best for you!
